Common Pest Control Misconceptions You Shouldn’t Believe

January 21, 2021 by Gateway Leave a Comment

There is a lot of misinformation about what attracts them and what works to get rid of them. It’s important to know the truth about these myths, so you know what works and what doesn’t.

Books, movies, cartoons, and stories spread common misconceptions about pests such as mice, rats, roaches, etc. There is a lot of misinformation about what attracts them and what works to get rid of them. It’s important to know the truth about these myths, so you know what works and what doesn’t.

Here are some common misconceptions about pests:

  • Pests equal an unclean home – If you have a pest problem, you may think this indicates that your house is unclean. The truth is, even the cleanest home can fall victim to a pest infestation. No amount of cleaning will guarantee that the pests will go away.
  • Mice are attracted to cheese – Cartoons are certainly at fault for this misconception. Because people think cheese is their favorite snack, many people use it on mousetraps. However, mice tend to prefer sweeter foods high in carbohydrates, like peanut butter.
  • Pets keep pests away – Many think they won’t have pests if they have dogs and cats. But most domesticated pets don’t hunt and get rid of bugs and rodents. The reality is, having pets can actually attract more pests because they bring in fleas and other bugs. The leftover food in their bowls is just food for hungry critters.
  • Bedbugs are only in your bed – Bedbugs might be one of the most dreaded pests to have because they are so difficult to get rid of. One common misconception is that they are only attracted to a person’s bed. Unfortunately, this is not true. Bedbugs can be found in curtains, couches, chairs, carpets, stuffed animals, and other places.
  • They’ll go away on their own – When you find traces of pests in your house, it’s likely that they’ve found your house a comfortable place to live. You may want to hope for the best and assume that they will go away, but the truth is you need to take action right away. Sighting a pest once or twice may indicate more are on the way. Get rid of them before they become a much bigger problem.
  • Daddy longlegs are venomous – Some do find them to be creepy, but they are completely harmless. They do not have venom glands or fangs. Some have defensive secretions that might be toxic to small animals if ingested.

There are many other myths associated with pests. The best thing you can do when you discover pests in your house is call in a professional pest control company.
